A Leader Who Listens
Four years ago I stated that the residents of Grand Terrace deserve a Mayor with an understanding of municipal finance, this is as important now as it was then. Through my years of service on council ask questions, press staff to find more effective ways to manage contracts, and support innovative staffing to provide more service for tax dollars.
Four years ago I stated that it was crucial that our Mayor have an understanding of land use and zoning issues required for the needed development that is in our future - this experience I have gained through my five years of service on the planning commission in addition to my nearly 8 years serving on council I have further developed this understanding. Our City is beginning to build out its only commercial corridor and building infill residential, making this a crucial time to "get it right."
Now more than ever I believe it is crucial that our Mayor understand and support
returning to the basics of working with all of our volunteer organizations to
help augment, not replace, the city staff. I have demonstrated that I am
committed to working with our non-profits, service clubs and sports leagues by
being involved, donating to and working with these fine organizations. And there
is no substitute to this.
Additionally, it continues to be crucial that the
Mayor have highly developed communication skills and be willing to use them in
multiple forums. Public speaking, responding to emails, in social media, writing
to the news media as well as talking with the news media and speaking with local
and regional leaders and elected officials but always making sure the city is
shown in the best possible light. Additionally, the Mayor must be able to
discuss any issue with any resident in a calm and reasoned manner, even when the
resident’s views and perspectives are completely different than those of the
Mayor. Moreover, the Mayor must be able to discuss any issue with their fellow
council members in a clear, calm and reasoned manner, even when their views and
perspectives are completely different. The Mayor must be able to disagree
without being disagreeable and to have discussion without denigration.
So
when I'm asked why I'm asking for another term as Mayor; With our City reaching
past fiscal health I believe that I can keep the City focused delivering
services within its means while finding outside sources; further, I would not be
doing all I can do for the residents of Grand Terrace if I do not continue to
undertake the challenge of keeping City heading toward fiscal sustainability.
I believe I continue to be the right person for this position at this time and
that I have demonstrated this for the past four years. I believe the residents
of Grand Terrace have earned the right to have the choice to continue with their
current leadership. I continue to give to the residents the following; I have
the experience, the education, training and the patience to continue to lead
this City as Mayor of Grand Terrace.
So when I'm asked a question about why I'm running for Re-election as your Mayor. The simple reason is that I believe that I am the best person for this position at this time; further, I would not be doing all I can do for the residents of Grand Terrace if I do not continue to serve in this vital role at this difficult time in our city's history.
These are just a few of the reasons I am running for
Re-election as your Mayor. I would hope residents would ask similar
questions of others seeking this office or any office.
I'm asking you for your vote.
